Waaaay back in 1995 I pondered the possibilities of “The Net” as it became available for regular folk, like me. I had already spent a handful of years enjoying time on the vic 20, C 64, Apple Lisa, Apple 512 and various other Macs, so I was hooked on the idea of tech in my life.
I remember the first time logging into the Net at a friend’s house. Not much eye-candy back then, like looking through a card catalog at a library with a few simple low rez images, even Amazon in 1995 (image shown) wasn’t much to look at! But in 1996 I took the plunge and purchased a domain.
Why the “Accrete” name?
In my family’s book collection was a 1933 unabridged Webster’s dictionary. The spine was at least 8″. I recall spending hours looking through that big book for new words and ideas. So when it came to picking the name of my domain it made sense to spend some quality time with that dictionary. I started just after the intro pages…and it didn’t take long to find the word “Accrete”.
ac·creteəˈkrēt/verb: accreteto grow by accumulation or coalescence.
- form (a composite whole or a collection of things) by gradual accumulation.“the collection of art he had accreted was to be sold”
- Astronomy(with reference to matter or a body) come or bring together under the influence of gravitation.“the gas will cool and then accrete to the galaxy’s core”
All that growing by being added to sounded just what I was looking for in a domain name. So I grabbed it. Over the years I’ve had inquiries from international companies to rock bands interested in acquiring the domain. And while I have no intentions of turning it into a commercial-for-profit site as a core philosophy… the idea of letting it go easily is, well, not easy. So it may stay in the family for at least the next generation to add-to?
